The grade of the coal and its ability to bond depends on the grade of the coal (a measure of volatiles and metamorphism) as well as mineral impurities and the ability of the coal to melt, expand and resolidify when heated. Metallurgical coal can be divided into hard Coking coal (HCC), medium coking coal, semi-soft coking coal (SSCC), pulverized coal injection (PCI) coal.

Hard Coking Coals (HCC):

In 2018, the market value of HCC was 87,854 million USD, which increased to 156161.6 million USD in 2023, indicating a significant growth in the market value over the years. The value of HCC has a consistent increase from 2018 to 2023, with a significant jump in 2022, reflecting its importance in steelmaking.

Semi-soft Coking Coal (SSCC): In 2022, the market value of semi-soft coking coal was 37,837.7 million USD, indicating a period of growth and strong demand.

In 2023, the market value decreased to 35,565.0 million USD, suggesting a possible market adjustment or a response to broader economic indicators.

Pulverized Coal Injection (PCI) Coal: In 2018, the market value of PCI Coal was 28,493.6 million USD. By 2023, the market value increased to 49,773.0 million USD. PCI coal has experienced the most significant growth in market value, suggesting an increasing adoption of this type in the steel industry.

Hard Coking Coals (HCC): HCC dominates the production volumes, with a consistent share of over 50% in the global metallurgical coal market. Hard coking coals (HCC) accounted for 55.7% of production share in 2023.

Medium Coking Coal: Medium coking coal accounted for 5.92% of production share in 2023. Production of medium coking coal has remained relatively stable, with a small but consistent market share.

Semi-soft Coking Coal (SSCC): The production market share of semi-soft coking coal (SSCC) has remained at around 18%. Semi-soft coking coal accounted for 17.92% of production share in 2023. SSCC has a moderate production volume, with a market share that has slightly decreased over the years.

Pulverized Coal Injection (PCI) Coal: PCI coal production has shown a gradual increase, aligning with the growth in its market value. The production market share of pulverized coal injection (PCI) coal has remained at around 20%. Pulverized coal injection (PCI) coal accounted for 20.46% of production share in 2023.
